SOLAR FUSES - WHAT DO YOU NEED & WHERE DO THEY GO?

Welcome to our discussion on solar fuses! We will be exploring what fuses are, why they are important, and what fuse you will need based on your solar system.

First, what exactly is a fuse? A fuse is essentially an electrical safety device that is designed to protect electrical circuits from overloading or short-circuiting. In other words, it acts as a barrier to prevent excessive electrical currents from damaging your equipment.

Why are fuses so important in solar systems? The answer lies in the nature of solar energy itself. Solar energy is generated from photons, which create electrical charges that need to be properly managed to avoid system damage or even potential safety hazards. Fuses are an integral component in ensuring the stability and safety of your solar system.

So, how do you know what type of fuse you need for your solar system? To calculate the minimum fuse needed, you can use this simple formula: Imp x 1.25 = minimum fuse needed, then round up. The "Imp" refers to the current at Pmax, that your panels can handle. It is crucial to use the correct fuse to avoid damaging your system. It’s also important to note that fuses are only really recommended when you’re using two or more solar panels.

For example, if you’re using four Pro 100W 12V Mono Solar Panels, each of those panels' Imp rating is 4.76A. With that said, using the formula we would get 19.04A x 1.25 = 23.8A, we would then round up and need a 25A in-line fuse. Remember to always round up when choosing your fuse.

When it comes time to install your solar fuses, they should be installed between the solar panels and charge controller when two or more panels are used, as well as between your charge controller and battery. This helps to minimize the risk of a dangerous electrical surge.

In conclusion, understanding solar fuses and their importance is vital for maintaining the safety and stability of your solar system. By using the formula above and placing your fuses in the proper locations, you can enjoy the full benefits of solar energy without worrying about damaging your equipment.
