Newpowa X Pacific Discovery

Part 9: What Preparations Are Underway?

As we get closer to the beginning of Pacific Discovery’s journey across the Pacific, we wanted to see what preparations are underway. So, for this month’s update, we asked the Pacific Discovery team a couple of questions and as a result, we’ve received yet another amazing first-hand account. But this time, it’s from our friend Stuart Thompson, the Navigator and one of the rowers of Pacific Discovery.

Q: What has the Pacific discovery team done in recent weeks?

A: “It's been an exciting few weeks for the Pacific Discovery team as we completed our pre-race inspection. This gives us a great benchmark for where all of our hard work has put us and where we need to focus before the race starts. We checked and re-checked all of our key systems and equipment taking note of any items we need to address.

Iron Ore put on her red racing dress and she's looking absolutely stunning! Newpowa’s livery is leading the way to Hawaii on our bow section.”

Q: How is the team utilizing our solar solutions?

A: “The next cool part of our project comes down to details and understanding what we can expect to squeeze out of our Newpowa solar solution. We have added some last-minute electrical equipment, such as our Windex, repeater, and a fancy new plotter so we will be adjusting and testing our power plan in the Californian sun. We will re-check the expected usage from our equipment and test the Ah to make sure we understand our usage and charging parameters.”

Q: What logistics are in the process?

A: “The contrast is stark as Iron Ore is patiently waiting in a Medieval Tithe barn in the UK, full of the latest tech', (and a toilet bucket) ready to be delivered for her long sea passage to California, in March. We also continue with many other items such as food testing and order, and not forgetting mental and physical preparations.

We can't wait to see her again, get our final race inspection passed, and make our final preparations before we 'NewpowaUp' our systems, point Iron Ore in the general direction of Hawaii, and go for it!”

You heard it here first folks! The Pacific Discovery team is still hard at work making sure everything is in place and ready to go come June 12th, 2023! We also love to hear about how our solar solutions are being implemented onboard “Iron Ore” as well as how the team is testing and preparing for the 40 days at sea. Stay tuned for the next installment!
