Federal solar tax credit

The 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit schedule was cut short by federal law changes in mid-2026. Whether you can claim it on a 2026 purchase depends on timing — confirm your year on the official IRS page before you budget.

NEM 3.0 net billing

PG&E, SCE & SDG&E now pay much lower avoided-cost rates (~3.7–4.6¢/kWh) for power you export. The math rewards using it yourself — daytime loads, batteries, off-grid self-consumption — not oversending to the grid.

Limited availability

SGIP battery rebate

New applications now only flow into the RSSE / AB 209 budget for low-income and high-outage-risk households. Most general homeowners no longer qualify.

5 · California solar FAQ

Is the 30% federal tax credit still available in California?

The federal credit schedule changed under the July 2026 federal law update. Whether it applies to your purchase depends on timing — check the official IRS page (linked below) for your tax year.

How does NEM 3.0 change what I should build?

Exported power earns only ~3.7–4.6¢/kWh, so design for self-consumption: use solar during the day, store what you can, and size to real loads instead of oversending to the grid.

Can I still get SGIP money for a battery?

Only in the low-income / disadvantaged / high-outage RSSE categories. For most California homeowners, the general pool is closed.

Do foggy coastal areas even work for solar?

Yes — plan around it. Size for December output and overpanel slightly. Even 4–5 peak sun hours a day is meaningful for RV and cabin systems.
